Oak Street Lightcatcher
Oak Street Lightcatcher is a 2,350-square-foot, single-story residence in a walkableneighborhood of Carrboro, North Carolina. Designed around natural light, the houseunfolds between two generous porches: a welcoming front porch that engages the streetand a sheltered backyard porch inspired by the covered outdoor spaces of La Pampa,Argentina, the birthplace of one of the owners. Together, they extend the life of the houseoutdoors and create a continuous relationship between the home, the landscape, and theneighborhood.Natural light is the organizing idea throughout the house, from its siting and compactfootprint to its sculptural skylights and clerestories. The interior is organized around acentral axis connecting the front and back yards, with carefully balanced collective, private, and support spaces. Simple, minimal detailing and a warm material palette createa sense of calm, while built-in elements, carefully proportioned rooms, and creativestorage make the 2,350-square-foot home highly efficient. Energy performance and agingin place were also integral to the design, with a high-performance envelope, solar-readyinfrastructure, and accessibility features incorporated from the beginning.
